Why Fonts Matter by Sarah Hyndman

Recent type trends:

  • minimalism
  • blobby fonts like Cooper – windsor “typographic banana bread of 2020” – nostalgia
  • curvy blobby serifs like P22 Mackinac and Souvenir
  • wavy fonts like Chee
  • ink trap type used at size or digitally so you can see the sharp gaps- trying to portray humanity?
  • angular serifs like medium’s new logo

Using trends:

  • Consider mood you want to evoke
  • Look for authentic overlaps between category expectations and brand uniqueness (or break out of category expectations)
