I have no interest in video games but this oral history is told in such a compelling way I kept getting sucked in over what I was reading. For an hour and a half! The amount of research done is incredible. This is the type of cultural record that should be archived somewhere official, it’s that well done. And it’s made by some person funded by Patreon supporters — exactly what crowd funding is meant for, to create niche things like this that probably wouldn’t have been made otherwise.

Watched Fantastic Fungi
Delve into the magical world of fungi, from mushrooms that clear oil spills to underground fungal networks that help trees communicate.
Thought it would be focused on the science of fungi networks and uses of fungi, but those were kind of glossed over in favor of hippie bullshit about spirituality and opening your mind with psychedelics and becoming one with the universe 🙄 Complete with mandala visualizations lmao 🙄🙄🙄 I don’t know who this was aimed at because it’s not changing anyone’s minds about shrooms. There was just enough of the science to keep us watching and thinking it’d go deeper. Disappointing. At least the footage of mushrooms growing in like two seconds was cool.
David Attenborough takes us into the remarkable lives of hummingbirds via stunning slow motion photography. Everything about these tiny birds is superb and extreme. They have the highest metabolism, fastest heart beat and most rapid wing beat in the avian world. They evolved to feed on flowering plants but are now a crucial part of wider ecosystems. How do they mate, raise their young, and live?
- Hummingbirds need to drink every 15 minutes
- To not starve overnight they go into torpor
- Feet and legs evolved to save weight but useless for anything but perching
- Fuschia’s long pistils are for hummingbirds to hold onto while they drink
- Red flowers common for hummingbirds to hide from bees which are red green colorblind
- Their hearts beat 1000x a minute when flying to supply their wing muscles with enough oxygen
- Hummingbirds are only found in the Americas

This episode centered around alligators, though with plenty of other animals. Sweet courtship and caretaking by momma gator. Dearth of manatee footage despite being the thumbnail. Perhaps they’re just not that exciting to film / watch.
Watched Follow Through
People have opinions about skier Caroline Gleich: Inspirational. Gumby. Social media star. Role model. Model masquerading as a mountaineer. At sixteen, she stumbled upon a copy of the cult classic guidebook The Chuting Gallery. Irreverent and wonderfully arbitrary, the guidebook lays out a set of 90 ski mountaineering lines across Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. They were difficult and dangerous. When she first said out loud she wanted to ski them, she was met with laughter. “Maybe it was because I was five feet tall, or I was a little blonde girl, but I remember that clearly — and it didn’t feel good” says Gleich. After a decade building her skills, Gleich set out to complete her vision and become the skier she dreamt of being. “Follow Through” is a story of loss, belonging and desire for respect. In this age of hyperconnectivity, which voices do we choose to hear and which do we ignore?
I didn’t realize ski mountaineer was a thing. It looks horrible.

Nice idea to frame the desert park’s story around the showdown. The first “showdown” between a rattlesnake and roadrunner even used the face to face cuts from Western cinematography. Good soundtrack.

It’s been years since I went to Yosemite, but I hope we’ll be able to make it back sometime. The tricky question is when to go: normally I’d want to go in the fall shoulder season, but these days California is on fire so much it doesn’t seem to make sense to plan a fall trip when you’re likely to be smoked out. Honestly, the whole West Coast and even inland is becoming hard to travel in fall because of smoke – we got smoked out of a mini trip this fall, and a few years ago had a terrible trip to Banff due to smoke. I guess you have to choose your poison: tourists or fire.
Watched Wild Nordic Land of Ice and Snow
As seen by the Viking gods, the fabled wildernesses of Norway, Finland and Sweden are revealed from the skies above.
The Top of the World uncovers a vast frozen wilderness marked by unique artic wildlife, age-old traditions and a battle against the harshest winters.
This episode is probably the most original of the bunch, each had a little original material but a lot of very similar content. This episode was more weighted towards the people of the north.
This series is big into the zoom and accelerate editing technique, which I find compelling even though it should get old.
Apparently in the Arctic Circle the snow comes starting in August. *shudder*

The creatures of the taiga find their homes deep within Scandinavia’s ancient forests and this fall season will be the ultimate test of survival.
They let themselves have some fun on the narration on this one.

Man, those transient killer whales are nasty! No wonder we love our resident orcas that just eat salmon.
