Weeknotes: July 5-11, 2025

the oceanspray seems very happy this year

Husband started his new job this week! πŸ™Œ He’s working with a lot of the same people, but no more 6am calls with Romania or midnight calls with India — I endorse 😴

Win of the week: made a summer playlist 🎢 (mirrored on Spotify if you like 2000s-2020s indie / alt tunes)

Looking forward to:Β heard from a middle school buddy I haven’t seen since 2019, we’re going to grab dinner soon!

Stuff I did:

  • 5.75 hours consulting
  • 3.25 hours writing
  • baked the blueberry cobbler from Smitten Kitchen Keepers
  • switching pharmacies *again* — my local drugstore is becoming a CVS 😣 I hate that unfettered capitalism demands corporate consolidation so that local retail chains don’t seem viable anymore
  • slept terribly on Saturday night so my plans to be productive on Sunday went out the window — vegged out and read a book instead
  • played Valheim with my husband and a friend — I am so bad at video games πŸ˜‚
  • received a reply from my House rep — I’d written in saying I questioned her commitment to our laws for voting to table impeachment, she said yeah what the president did was unconstitutional but we were never gonna win and it would have looked partisan… so basically, confirming her lack of commitment to law in favor of “politics” πŸ™„ I’ve updated the post with her (office’s) response, and also updated my April email about immigration with the answers I received from all three of my federal reps
  • updated my June listening chart
  • two friend walks πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸšΆπŸšΆ
  • one virtual appointment (hope either my old insurance or new insurance is active 🀞)
  • I’m experimenting with Obsidian to see if it helps me wrap my head around a bunch of ideas around taste and aesthetics I’ve been building up… played around with a canvas to start, my friend suggests I add links between stubs to make the local graph useful (and ironically James sent me this perfectly apropos piece about the aesthetics of Obsidian versus Notion the day after I installed it πŸ˜„)
obsidian canvas mind map with 60+ stub ideas connected by a lot of arrows
I dumped in chunks of several draft blog posts as individual notes and tried laying them all out on a canvas — I see why I may be getting overwhelmed deciding how to organize these ideas πŸ˜‚

Dinners:

  • baked tilapia with tomatoes and chickpeas (inspired by — omitted sun-dried tomatoes and bell pepper, only had 1 pint tomatoes and would have liked more) + rice + crusty bread + lemonade
  • burritos (with leftover rice)
  • corn quesadillas + black beans + prickly pear lemonade
  • fake chicken burgers + curly fries + lemonade
  • baked potatoes + creamed leeks + Coke
  • hummus + pita chips + Rainier cherries πŸ’
  • tater tot nachos + prickly pear lemonade

Reading:

  • Read Sweet Obsession by Katee Robert and I Think I’m in Love with an Alien by Ann Aguirre
  • Finished reading Dangerous Fictions by Lyta Gold
  • Continued reading What We See When We Read by Peter Mendelsund
  • Started reading Antimemetics by Nadia Asparouhova and Self Made by Tara Isabella Burton
  • DNF’d One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig and Man’s Best by Pornsak PichetshoteΒ and Jesse Lonergan

Words I looked up:

New music I listened to:

Nature notes:

  • saw a (downy?) woodpecker drinking from the bird bath
  • husband spotted a bird get ‘stuck’ behind the netting in front of our apple trees and ran out to cut it open before the bird could get itself tangled πŸ₯Ί his presence was enough to make it fly away safely πŸ’“ he took down the fence immediately though
wasp on bright yellow goldenrod flowers sticking up in a spire
the goldenrod got cut back to the ground when we had the new backyard put in, but happily it came back from the roots! assumed it should be easy enough to ID this wasp but couldn’t figure it out so I have re-installed iNaturalist 😎
pink-tinted leaves surrounding yet to open inflorescence of a bee balm with three stems visible
I never realized that the bee balm leaves also turned pink towards the flower 😍
